Life is a set of difficulties, challenges and whether people want to or not, they have to face these facts. But with my family’s tradition, the problem here is not about those difficulties or challenges; it is about how we can deal with them. Should we hide, retreat, and let these challenges destroy our lives or let them give us strength, patience and the spirit to take a step forward? The answer depends on our viewpoint of life.
My family is not a perfect or famous family. However, I think I am a lucky person when I consider how I was raised with these traditions by my family. Don Juan had said: “The difference between a soldier and a normal person is observation about their life, if the soldier thinks that each happening is an opportunity to challenge his abilities, then a normal person will think that they are a game of chance.” Actually, facing the difficulties in life is not too hard. With everything I had learned from my family’s experiences, I know that I just change viewpoints; I can get whatever I want easily in life. However, the environment never created human values, but it is just an element to help humans discover values about themselves. My family helped me understand that difficulties, challenges of studying are opportunities for me to complete and archieve my goals in the future. Calmly receiving many difficulties and finding ways to solve them is the easy way which my family had taught me to practice and use to archieve my education goals, as well as having a wide-awake view of life.
My family has a tradition of study. During the time I lived with my parents, I was affected by their qualities such as studiousness, patience, and never giving up. Like my father after finishing a difficult life in army, he didn’t stop there; he continued his dreams through study so nowadays he has become an engineer and a president of a company. Gradually, these facts had encouraged my attempt to become a better person. My parents have a dream that they want me to have an independence life early, so by trying their best, they gave me an opportunity to study and live in America where there is one of the best public education systems in the world. My family is a shining example for me to live and pursue my educational goals in this new environment. So during the time at North Thurston High school in America, I am a hard-working student. As your school aware, my GPA is 3.7 and I have maintained a high GPA, despite the fact that English is my second language.
I have a strong Math and Science background both from here. When I was a little kid I really liked to play with toys such as cars, planes or machines. Many years later, when I was all grown up, I learned that I liked to fix machines and cars. So when I studied in high school in the U.S., I learned skills in fixing cars and machines. I also attended to many presentations, festivals and exhibitions about cars and machines. Day by day, these memories had come to my mind, they filled up my mind and gradually they became my hobbies, looking at machines, thinking, fixing, getting new ideas, making new styles for machines and every time I am working on them, I feel that I have the whole world in my hands. I can control my time, and my skills, just by looking at them. Nowadays, cars, machines and planes have become a daily part of our lives. We’ve gotten used to having them around and could not stand to lack them. Especially in my country where there has been a project to be developed about cars or machines. So I decide to study mechanical engineering and become an engineer like my father in the future. I am sure that this job needs very much discipline and hard work, and from this job I can get a lot of choices for my future. For example, the work of a mechanical engineer ranges from the depths of the ocean to outer space. And I believe that I have enough elements to study and do this job because I consistently do high quality work and really enjoy learning. I want to improve myself and actively work to achieve my goals, especially because I am not easily disappointed and react well to set-backs. When challenged, I don’t give up.
16 years living in my country with my parents, and then I had had an independence life early in America, far away from my family, my parents, and relatives. The materialism may be enough for me, whereas spirituality is the thing that I lack. But life always smiles with us. I was so lucky when I accepted to do volunteer work at Merrill Gardens where I was supposed to help senior citizens. During the time I volunteered there, I learned a lot of things; especially recognized the difference in culture between my country and America. I did a wonderful job and was always so patient and kind. So the residents really like me, when I comes back to visit them they appreciate this.
After 3 years of living in America by myself, I have learned and observed a lot of things. I feel that I have grown up a lot and have become more mature. I think that America has changed me and taught me a lot of lessons in life, but it will not be my last stop on the route to success. It is just the beginning of the journey of thousands of miles. So I decided that Australia will be the second place where I want to study because when I was a kid I always dreamed that one day I would get to go to a lot of countries to improve my knowledge as well as to study more about the culture there. Like a person had said that “The poorest person in the world is not the one without a cent in his pocket, but the person who does not have a dream”. Graduating from High school in America, I had held a gold key in my hand to go to another palce. A place that has one of the best educational systems in the world. That would be Australia. On the other hand, nowadays almost all countries in the world have dropped into the crisis of economic difficulties and of course America will be affected the most, especially with the tuition, costs could easily go up as high as 14%. From this fact, it will be a big problem for my parents if they want to support full tuition in the time I study in the U.S. By the way, the U.S is really far away from my country, it is almost a half the way of the earth but Autralia is closer to my country, it just takes 8 hours by plane and my parents want me to study at a country where it is closer to Viet Nam so I can visit them every year. From these thought I believe that it is a great chance for me to reach my parents’ requestion as well as chasing my dream so I chose Autralia is a second place where I want to attend.
With finding information on the internet and participating presentations about study abroad, I have chosen Holmesglen Institute to study Diploma of Engineering - Manufacturing and this school has connected with Deakin University to get Bachelor of Engineering. I had applied for the school and received the Letter of Offer from the school.
So this is my plan to study in Autralia:
- I will study English in 10 weeks at Holmesglen Institute.
- After that, I will continue studying Diploma of Engineering - Manufacturing in 2 years
- When I finish the program, I will transfer to Deakin University to study Bachelor of Engineering in 3 years
- Then I will go back to Viet Nam to continue to improve my job, dream and try to become the best engineer at some top international companies to develop mechanical engineering and bring my country to a higher level in the world.
Finally, I want to say thank you so much to all of the staff of Tan Dai Duong who have given valuable time to help me in my study plan. I will fly to Autralia. Thank You Very Much.
Thanks to Tan Dai Duong
